A great wine begins with planning, and making very fine wine is both an art and a science. You can learn the basics and then hone into the aspects that you like the best. At Vintners Own we take care of all the details and let you explore the areas you are most interested in following.
There are many decisions that you need to make once you decide to make your own wine. The first decision you'll need to make is what varietal you would like to make and from which vineyard you would like us to get your grapes.
In our initial meetings we'll help you frame your plan to create the wine you'll be proud to open and pour for friends. We have created the Vintners Own list of 28 decisions to support the wine making process. It also provides an excellent communications tool to ensure that anyone helping you along the way is clear what your goals are.
Fruit:Great wine can only be made from great grapes. Your first decision, as a Vintners Own winemaker, is to choose the varietal and make the selection of vineyard. At each stage during growth and prior to harvest we carefully monitor the fruit and will keep you up to date though our interactive web-site.
Harvest:When your fruit reaches the perfect combination of sugar, acid, pH and taste, you will be notified that harvest has begun. Within a few days, and after carefully cold transporting your fresh fruit to our Vintners Own facility, the winemaking process will begin.
Crush:Just imagine you and your friends running you hands through clusters of grapes, and making the final selection of which berries will be magically transformed into your wine! The fun has just begun!
Fermentation:Over the next few weeks your fruit will make its journey into wine. Frequent punch downs (by you our our staff) will ensure that good color and complexity are extracted.
Press:Once primary fermentation is complete it's time to press the grapes to separate the wine from the solids. This is the basic wine as consumed thousands of years ago in ancient Greece, but we still have a few tricks up our sleeves to refine and mature your wine.
Barrel:Your choice of barrel is crucial as it definitely will influence the characteristics and chemistry of your wine, as it changes during the months of barrel aging. Regular testing and racking of your wine will ensure its clarity and character.
Testing:To ensure the health and excellence of your wine, our experts at Vintners Own will be carefully monitoring your wine throughout the process and making all necessary adjustments.
Tasting:You and your friends will be able to enjoy tasting your wine as it slowly makes its journey to the bottle. Vintners Own staff will always be at your side to ensure success.
Bottling:Your choice of bottle, cork, foil and the creation of your label are an important part of your wines identity. Our creative staff will assist you as needed in all these considerations. Bottling parties have always been a highlight of the winemaking experience at Vintners Own!
