Sonoma Valley

John Baillie Vineyard - Merlot

The 15-year-old John Baillie Vineyard located in the inland portion of Sonoma Valley is situated on an east-facing hillside. The vines are 110R rootstock and Clone 4, with 8 x 5 vertical trellis system and cordon pruning.

The Sonoma appellation is internationally recognized for producing well-structured Merlots, and the rocky volcanic soil at this site provides a well-drained environment that consistently produces good ripening of the fruit.

The eastern orientation of the Baillie site also helps to avoid the problems that some Merlots of the region face with hot early evening sun. In addition this vineyard benefits from afternoon winds that come into this valley. The resulting increased hang time produces enhanced flavors, less common in the average Sonoma merlot.
